Blogmas Day 20: December Birchbox ★★★☆☆

Hello my lovelies!

Today I’m going to do a little review of the December Birchbox and if it’s not that impressive I’m debating cancelling my subscription. So far the boxes have been fairly disappointing.

Now as usual the box was beautiful. Despite not always loving the contents of the boxes, I can’t deny that Birchbox definitely take pride in their product even if the individual items can be a little hit-or-miss.

Nip + Fab Kale Fix Moisturiser £14.95 ★★☆☆☆

img_1889.jpg

Nip + Fab is raved about online, but I have to say I didn’t love this moisturiser. I have very sensitive skin so I’m very fussy when it comes to moisturiser, and while the smell was divine it was very heavy and it didn’t seem to sink into my skin the way it should have. I would be prepared to spend £14.95 on a good moisturiser but I don’t think this is worth the money.

Pixi Shea Butter Lip Balm in Natural Rose £8 ★★★★☆

This was the free gift in this month’s box and is the full sized product. I thought it would just be a run-of-the-mill lip balm but it has the appearance of a high quality matte lipstick while still being as light and moisturising as a chapstick. The coverage didn’t last long but at the end of the day I can’t expect a chapstick to do a lipstick’s job. Having said that, I can’t justify spending £8 on a chapstick when I can get one, albeit a less luxurious one, for £1 at Primark.

Spectrum Collections B04 Angled Blender Brush £4.99 ★★★★★

The Spectrum brushes were one of the main reasons I subscribed to Birchbox. I expected this to be an ordinary, if slightly higher quality eye brush but it was actually a lovely brush. It seemed to blend out eyeshadow better than my other brushes while still managing to pack on a lot of product. It also blended out my eyeshadow perfectly and applied glitter eyeshadow like a dream. The price is also very reasonable. Even if I do decide to stop subscribing to Birchbox I will definitely be buying a Spectrum brush again.

Kebelo Clarifying Shampoo £13.95 ★★★★☆

I really liked this shampoo. A little of it went a long way and it lathered very nicely. It smelled lovely and left my hair feeling squeaky clean and very shiny. Having said that… £13.95 for shampoo? No.

Rituals Foaming Shower Gel £4.50 ★★★★★

img_1890.jpg

This is very luxurious. It’s a little like the Imperial Lather foaming shower gels but it smells less synthetic. At £4.50 I think I could justify buying this as a little treat. I would definitely use this product again.

A recurring theme with these boxes is that I enjoy many of the things I try but I would never buy them as individual products because they are too expensive. One of the reasons I subscribed to these boxes was to try some new things but it’s very disappointing to like an item on to find it’s too expensive to justify buying regularly.

Having said that the only thing that stopped me giving this box four stars was the moisturiser and the individual prices. This box is amazing value considering that I got two full-size products which were worth more than what I paid for the box as well as two testers and a high quality brush.

  1. (I already submitted a comment so sorry if this appears twice!)
What’s your verdict then? Are you sticking to it? I have a review of Decembers Glossybox going out tomorrow and (spoiler alert) I loved it! Everything was full sized and the box was lovely. I also got their Secret Santa box too which was a nice little extra.
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head though with these subscription boxes, it’s great to try everything but the full size is usually so expensive you’ll never buy it again!
